Energy-Transition & Hydrogen Modelling (LEAP · H2RES)

Long-term energy scenarios, hourly renewables-and-hydrogen optimisation and blue-versus-green hydrogen economics for energy companies, consultancies, NGOs, development agencies, government, think tanks and investors. The result is evidence you can take to a board, a regulator or a funder.

Discovery from $1,000 · Prototype model from $5,000 · Full study $10,000 – $100,000+

This service is for organisations only. We do not do any part of a student’s assessed work. Students: see our research coaching (you stay the sole author and do the analysis). Doctoral researcher learning LEAP or H2RES? See our Ethical PhD Research Mentoring (software training; you build and run your own models).

Who it's for

Energy companies & utilities

Capacity, storage and hydrogen pathways tested before you commit capital.

Consultancies

Modelling capacity for your own client studies, under your brand and your licences.

NGOs & development agencies

Transparent scenarios for programme design, NDC support and stakeholder dialogue.

Government & think tanks

Long-term demand, supply and emissions outlooks that policy teams can read and reuse.

Investors & lenders

Techno-economic screening of hydrogen and renewables projects and portfolios.

What we model

We use LEAP for long-term, economy-wide energy and emissions accounting and H2RES for hourly, least-cost optimisation of renewables, storage and hydrogen. On larger studies we use both and link them.

Long-term LEAP scenarios

Energy demand, supply and emissions scenarios to 2030, 2050 or 2060 in LEAP (Low Emissions Analysis Platform), with sector demand, transformation and emissions accounting.

H2RES hourly optimisation

Hour-by-hour optimisation of solar and wind with hydrogen production and storage, batteries and flexibility in H2RES. It shows where curtailment, storage and electrolysers pay off.

Blue vs green hydrogen

Blue hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS), compared with green hydrogen from renewables on cost, emissions, capture rates and resource risk.

Renewables–hydrogen hybrids for industry

Hybrid renewable and hydrogen systems for decarbonising industrial heat, feedstock and process energy, sized against real load profiles.

Circular-economy assessment frameworks

Integrated assessment frameworks and decision matrices that weigh circular-economy measures alongside energy, cost and emissions criteria.

Techno-economic evaluation

LCOE, LCOH, capex/opex, sensitivity and break-even analysis with transparent, documented assumptions.

Policy briefs

Short, plain-language briefs for decision-makers, plus the technical annex behind them.

Multi-scenario design

Each study compares pathways on the same assumptions, so the differences come from the choices being tested and nothing else. A typical set:

  • Business as usual (BAU)
  • High renewables
  • Circular economy
  • Gas optimisation
  • Blue hydrogen (with CCS)
  • Renewables–hydrogen hybrid

Deliverables

  • Model files (LEAP area and/or H2RES inputs and run scripts) handed over to your team
  • A documented assumptions book with data sources and every input you can change
  • Results workbook and charts for each scenario
  • A technical report with methodology, scenario results and sensitivities
  • A policy or investment brief (2–6 pages) for decision-makers
  • A walkthrough and training session so your team can rerun and update the model

How an engagement runs

  1. 01

    Discovery

Objectives, questions, boundaries, horizon (2030/2050/2060) and licences confirmed in writing.

  2. 02

    Data

Demand, resource, technology-cost and emissions data gathered, checked and documented with you.

  3. 03

    Model build

LEAP and/or H2RES model built and calibrated against a base year you sign off.

  4. 04

    Scenarios

BAU and alternative pathways designed, run and stress-tested with sensitivities.

  5. 05

    Report

Results, technical report and policy brief delivered, then a handover and training session.

Experience: Our team has built multi-scenario LEAP and H2RES models covering blue hydrogen with CCS and renewable-hydrogen hybrid systems.

Engagement note: software licences

  • LEAP is developed and licensed by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). Your organisation needs a LEAP licence that covers the work. SEI gives free licences to government, NGO and academic organisations in low- and middle-income countries and most small island developing states, and standard licences to consultancies, utilities and businesses. Free student licences cannot be used for consulting or client work.
  • H2RES is developed at the University of Zagreb and described by its developers as open source. When we checked (19 Oct 2026), the public repository had no licence file, so we confirm usage terms with the developers before commercial use. The optimisation solver it runs on may need its own commercial licence.
  • We confirm the licence route, solver and data rights in the Discovery scope before any paid modelling starts.

Pricing

Discovery

From $1,000

Questions, boundaries, data audit, licence route and a fixed-fee plan for the model build.

Prototype model

From $5,000

A working LEAP or H2RES model with a base year and two or three scenarios to test the approach.

Full study

$10,000 – $100,000+

A multi-scenario, multi-sector study with techno-economics, sensitivities, a report, a policy brief and handover.

Prices exclude taxes and third-party software licences. You approve a written scope and fee before any paid work starts. The first consultation is free.

Questions

LEAP is licensed by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). Your organisation must hold a LEAP licence that covers the engagement. SEI offers free licences to government, NGO and academic organisations in low- and middle-income countries and most small island developing states, and standard paid licences to consultancies, utilities and businesses. Student licences cannot be used for consulting or client work. We confirm the right licence route with you at Discovery.

H2RES is developed at the University of Zagreb and its developers describe it as open source. When we checked on 19 October 2026, its public code repository had no licence file, so we confirm usage terms with the developers before commercial use. H2RES runs on an optimisation solver, and some solvers (Gurobi, for example) need a commercial licence. We agree the solver and any licences you need before the model build starts.

Yes. We build both pathways on the same demand and price assumptions so the comparison is like-for-like. That covers capture rate, residual and upstream emissions, gas price, electrolyser cost and renewable resource.

Not on this service. It is for organisations only, and we do not do any part of a student’s assessed work. Students can use our separate research coaching, where you stay the sole author and do the analysis yourself.

Discovery starts from $1,000, a prototype model from $5,000 and a full multi-scenario study from $10,000 to $100,000+, depending on scope, sectors, time resolution and data. You approve a written scope and fee before any paid work.
