What makes it special

GI-tagged variety

“Kalanamak” (Rice) is a registered Geographical Indication: application No. 205, certificate No. 194 dated 9 Sep 2013, valid up to 24 Mar 2030 [1][3].

Aroma & taste

The GI specification describes it as one of the finest scented rices of Uttar Pradesh, famous for taste, palatability and aroma, with cooked rice that is fluffy, soft and non-sticky [2].

Black husk

The name comes from its black husk: kala means black [2].

Grain quality

Researchers describe a medium-slender grain with about 70% head rice recovery and 19–20% amylose, which keeps cooked rice soft [4].

Improved varieties

Notified varieties include Kalanamak KN3, Bauna Kalanamak 101, Bauna Kalanamak 102, Kalanamak Kiran, Pusa Narendra Kalanamak 1 and Pusa CRD Kalanamak 2 [5].

A legend from the Buddha’s time

Legend links Kalanamak to the time of the Buddha; the GI filing records carbonised rice grains found at Aligarhwa, Siddharthnagar, which it identifies with Kapilvastu [2].

Nutrition: what studies report

  • Studies report a glycaemic index of about 49–52% for Kalanamak [4][6].
  • Studies report about 10.6–11% protein, and roughly three times the iron and four times the zinc of common rice [4][6].
  • ICAR-IIRR lists Kalanamak at 20.4 ppm zinc in polished seed, used as a check variety in its trials [7].
  • Researchers also report beta-carotene (provitamin A) in Kalanamak [4].

Figures vary by variety, growing conditions and processing, and are quoted from the cited studies, not from tests on our lots. This is not medical advice. Lab reports for a specific lot can be requested with a quote.

Origin & GI

The GI area covers 11 districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh: Bahraich, Balrampur, Basti, Deoria, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharthnagar and Shravasti [2][8].

Kalanamak is Siddharthnagar’s product under Uttar Pradesh’s One District One Product (ODOP) scheme [8]. Researchers say it should be grown in the Kharif season within the GI area to keep its grain quality [4].

Export policy: in April 2024 DGFT allowed export of up to 1,000 tonnes of Kala Namak rice through six specified customs stations (Notification 01/2023) [9][10]. Rules for non-basmati rice have changed since, so we confirm the current policy with every quote.
