What makes it special

GI-tagged Mithila Makhana

Mithila Makhana was registered as a Geographical Indication of Bihar on 16 Aug 2022 (application 696, certificate 421) [1][3].

Grown in water

Makhana is harvested from Euryale ferox, an aquatic crop of the eastern Indo-Gangetic plains, then roasted and popped [4].

National Makhana Board

The Union Budget 2025-26 announced a Makhana Board for Bihar; the National Makhana Board was constituted on 14 Sep 2025 with a ₹476.03 crore central scheme [5][6].

Growing production

India’s makhana production was 63,910 t in 2024-25 and 80,590 t in 2025-26 (second advance estimate), per the Ministry of Agriculture [6].

Export momentum

GI-tagged Mithila Makhana was exported to the UAE and USA in 2024-25, and a 7 t consignment was flagged off for New Zealand, Canada and the USA in Sept 2025 [7].

Nitrogen-flushed packing

Popped makhana can be packed with nitrogen flushing, which lowers oxygen in the pack and helps slow oxidation [8]. Format on request.

Nutrition: what studies report

  • Studies report about 8–11% protein, 73–80% carbohydrate and under 1% fat in makhana [2][4][9].
  • One study of popped fox nut reports calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc, and an amino-acid profile rich in glutamic acid, arginine and leucine [4].

Figures vary by variety, growing conditions and processing, and are quoted from the cited studies, not from tests on our lots. This is not medical advice. Lab reports for a specific lot can be requested with a quote.

Origin & GI

Makhana cultivation is concentrated in northern Bihar (the Mithilanchal region), where it supports more than 50,000 producing households, according to an ICRIER–APEDA study [3].

The same study reports exports to markets including the USA, UK and Australia, with export value at about USD 1.38 million [3].
