ISS tracker FAQ

Where is the ISS right now?

The map above shows the International Space Station’s live position, refreshed every few seconds, with the ground track for the past and next 90 minutes and the night side of Earth shaded.

How fast does the ISS travel?

About 28,000 km/h (17,500 mph). It circles Earth roughly every 90 minutes, about 16 times a day. Source: NASA — Space Station Facts and Figures

How high is the ISS?

It orbits at an average altitude of about 400 km (250 miles). The exact height changes slowly because of atmospheric drag and periodic reboosts. Source: NASA — Space Station Facts and Figures

Can I see the ISS without a telescope?

Yes. It looks like a bright, steady point of light moving across the sky, with no blinking lights, and it is the third-brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon. It is usually visible for a few minutes shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when your sky is dark but the station is still in sunlight. Source: NASA — Spot the Station FAQ

How are the pass times calculated?

Your browser calculates them from the station’s latest public orbital elements (TLE) published by CelesTrak, using the open-source satellite.js library. A pass is marked “likely visible” when the station is at least 10° above your horizon, your sky is dark (Sun more than 6° below the horizon) and the station is sunlit. Weather is not considered, and predictions shift after orbit-raising burns, so check again close to the time. Your location stays on your device. Source: CelesTrak

How long have people lived on the ISS?

The station has been continuously occupied since November 2000. Source: NASA — Space Station Facts and Figures
